Smart External Hard Disk Drive Enclosure

Objective: The objective of this idea is to perform copy/paste operations and play videos/photos or view file content to or from the external HDD/SSD to/from external devices such as pen drives/memory cards etc… with minimum interface without computer or any external system.

Problem Statement:

Currently many types of external hard disk drives are available in the market however all external HDD/SSD’s are designed to connect to the external systems such as computer, TV-BOX, TV etc… to access the files from the external HDD/SSD. If user wants to copy few files from external HDD/SSD   to other drives without connecting to computer or external systems which is impossible to do that kind of operations with the current generation external HDD’s.

Solution:

To achieve this, the external HDD/SSD enclosure with screen(which can be touch or non-touch), few buttons and few interfaces like USB ports/network ports and the integrated power supply or users can powered(with rechargeable batteries or normal alkaline batteries) the external HDD/SSD  through external power banks.

How it works:

This advanced external HDD/SSD enclosure which is independent and we can use this enclosure as traditional external HDD/SSD enclosure as completely independent device to copy or paste the files to or from this external HDD/SSD. This external HDD/SSD enclosure comes with built in operating system to access the files.

 First of all user need to open the enclosure and put the hdd/ssd inside the enclosure and then close the enclosure cap with screws or with digital lock mechanism. This external smart disk enclosure can be adjustable according to the disk size. For example this enclosure can be fit with 2.5 inch hdd  or 5.5 inch hdd/ssd devices. Once enclosed with hdd there is an option (by using small switch on the device) to use this device as traditional external HDD/SSD or Independent Mode. If user selects the option as external HDD then user can directly connect this device to the external devices such as computer/TV/TV box/Set-Top box etc… without any additional power supply. If user selects the option as independent mode then we need to switch ON this device by pressing power button to on the device. If integrated power supply is available then the device will switch on automatically or user should attach external power supply to work with. For example powerbank, AC adaptor etc…

 If the user selects the options as External HDD then the device will not work as independent mode which means all the integrated parts (such as display, buttons, USB, network interfaces on this device will be disabled and cannot be operated) so user can connect this device directly to the computer or any external devices and use it in the normal way. If the user selects the independent mode option, then the device will be disconnected automatically from external system such as computer, TV etc… and user need to switch on the device to start working on it.

If the user selects the independent mode option, then the external HDD/SSD features will not be available which means user cannot connect this device to the computer or any other external systems. Once the user selects the independent mode then the user needs to switch ON this device by pressing power button on the device. If integrated power supply is available then the device will switch on automatically or user should attach external power supply to work with. Once power supply is provided then the internal OS of external HDD/SSD enclosure activates and then the drives information will be displayed on the integrated display screen. For example C:, D:, E: etc… Then we  can access these drives or files by using up and down and enter buttons which are available next to the device. Or by using the touch operations of the screen.

If user wants to copy few files from this external HDD enclosure to any drive/pen drive/flash drive  then first user need to connect the pen drive to this device via USB port and the select the files or folders on the screen and then select the copy option to copy the contents from this drive to the provided external usb pen drive. Before copy or paste the contents the device will ask the user to enter the PIN/Password/Bio-metric input for authentication. Is authentication succeeded then the copy/paste process will initiate. Similarly, user can transfer the files from external pen drives to this device by accessing pen drive contents on the device screen.

User can record his/her bio-metric data into this device securely to open /close the enclosure to add hdd/ssd inside the enclosure. If any user tries to open the enclosure with man handling or trying to tampering by destroying the enclosure forcefully then the device will make the alarm sound.

User can use digital PIN or bio-metric data to lock and unlock the enclosure.

This Smart external enclosure can be directly connected to any external display units such as TV, Monitor etc… to view the content of the drive on the screen directly.

This external enclose can support to connect multiple HDD/SSD from external ports and then select the same from the inbuilt display screen to access the content.

 Technical Flow:

This Smart Drive Enclosure has internal system with own processor, RAM, OS and internal battery, Display screen, USB ports, Memory card slots, Network ports, display ports, HDMI ports built in WIFI and Bluetooth etc…and other required components to the start the system. Whenever user selects the option as ‘Independent Mode’ and switch on the power button then the processor and RAM will send the signals to the display unit. Now the internal Operating system will read the actual hard drive disks and display the drive content on the screen. Now user can select the drive and file contents and do the required operations like copy/paste to the external devices.

 Advantages:

  • No need to have computer or any other external device to cross check the contents in the external HDD or to copy/paste few files to or from this device to the external device such as pen drive or any portable device.
  • External power banks can be used to power-up these devices. So integrated power is optional.
  • Can integrate this device with PIN or BIO-Metrics for authentication.
  • Can also have network port available on this so we can use this device as network HDD
  • All the other characteristics are same as current external hdd’s.
  • Data encryption also available on this disk to secure the data content.
